The pithy writing representing the concepts in this one book will not be mastered by the vast majority of players, who will waste far too much time trying to digest other books.

Sklansky takes a very mathmatical approach to the games.

I should have read this book before trying to win money at Poker. Reads like textbook and lays out decision trees and mathematical theorems. Lists with This Book.

Impressions I love games, and I have always had a passing interest in poker. I know it was still being used widely as a resource when the poker boom kicked off fifteen years ago or so; Kenny Hallaert mentioned it when I interviewed him earlier this fall, saying it might still be useful for beginner players.

Both involve deep strategy, but in poker, instead of positions and calculation, you use probability and deception. Looks like a book for beginners as it covers many different games Jazz, Stud Omaha not to mention Texas Holdem etc. Definitely a foundation among poker books, although I wish it had more hold’em specific advice.

Well, it’s a very theory-heavy book, and while I found the theory important and useful, I’d rate this as a book that every poker player should davie and know, but it’s a little short on practical tips pker actually sitting at the table, beyond “Know your math and know your theory.


Rather, the book goes over all sorts of general concepts that you can use to improve your game. I found pokwr difficult to internalize and apply the finer concepts even as I read the book at a slow pace.

For any of you who play by the numbers, Sklansky is for you. I grew tired of seeing skklansky referenced in books where skilled poker players became quantitative masterminds, so I picked it up.

One thing that is difficult is it uses all kinds of poker jargon that is defined in the glossary or on line and I had to look up things on every other page. No trivia or quizzes yet. It is not light reading, more like a textbook, a beginning textbook on poker.
