So this is a very valuable book.
But Sklansky gives sklans,y thorough coverage to some of the basic principles that every winning poker player must know: Mar 14, Forest Tong rated it liked it. Maybe Dan does that in 2 and 3. Honestly, while I am not very good at math myself, I found the content quite understandable and took greatly from it. Clear, consise and very translatable from the page to the poker table.
Also of note is that this book covers sk,ansky poker theory, as applied to any poker game, which is another reason I didn’t rate it 5 stars. The game will eventually click for everyone and the experienced player that takes the time to read The Theory of Poker will be better off for it.
The Theory of Poker by David Sklansky
Those games were common in s California card rooms and are not often seen in the post Moneymaker era. Once you have the basics teorla you must read this book.
I like his focus on general concepts and strategy, rather than smlansky hand strategies and specific techniques. Sklansky’s famous Fundamental Theorem of Poker is laid out in this book and explained in great detail. Naturally he discusses the various types of players – tight, loose, aggressive, passive – and how to respond to someone who bluffs too much, bluffs too little, plays tightly, plays loosely, and so on.
With that said, you should read this book multiple times and give it careful study if you’re looking to ever become anything other than an amateur player. From Beginner to Winner by Lou Krieger and play some low limit to get experience and then try Sklansky again.

The math isn’t hard, the examples are clear, and the counterintuitive aspects of the game are given just the right amount of attention. This is essential if you are moving from Limit to No Limit Poker where the expected odds are quite different. This is truly the funda mental s. In general, although I learned many things from this book, I was not satisfied with his exposition or his examples.

What I realized is that the information is so ingrained sklandky how I play now that it’s hard to remember the player I use to be. The Theory of Poker uses a lot of mathematics to discuss what strategy to use given you and your opponents equity and pot odds.
If you don’t know the nuances of those games you can go to the end of the book where the rules are explained. For davkd of you who play by the numbers, Sklansky is for you. Somebody who got this book from the library before me did go over it with a pencil, but some people have, like, no manners.
This might be different if you playing in Bobby’s Room at the Bellagio with a high end opponent you know well. This is a great book to explain the theory behind poker bidding and play. Then I decided I better read it again to see if Sklanwky still agree with my assessment. Discusses theories and concepts applicable to nearly every variation of the game, including five-card draw highseven-card stud, hold ’em, lowball draw, and razz seven-card lowball stud. One of the salient facts about this book is that Sklansky discusses poker strategy in the context of many variations, such as razz, stud, and draw poker.
While this can get a bit confusing for a reader who really only knows NLHE at all i. It takes concentration and it will feel like work at times, but your results will improve because some of your opponents treat the game like roulette.
Overall if I could only recommend to you read just one poker book, this would be the one. Agen Domino s,lansky Tips and Techniques. I found this somewhat frustrating. If there’s something I know about the game that the other person doesn’t, and if he’s not willing to learn or can’t understand, then I take his money. Lots of sound helpful information throughout book and will benifit many playes at many levels.
The book is exactly what everyone says it is. Doyle Brunson’s Super System is considered an all-time classic, but you’ll get killed playing that way today.
