The real time to throw your arms up and give up is when you come full circle and they point you back to where you starterted. I notice you gave up giving them an actual rating… did you overrate some of the early books, and now are stuck wanting to give 11 or 12 to the better ones in comparison?

All of the humour and the puns haven’t lost any of their charm even 20 years or so after last reading them, in fact I think I picked up a few more references that sailed over my head last time. Asterix going to a new office is a repeated gag. The most memorable character of the book is Ptenisnet the Egyptian volunteer who believes that he is actually on a package holiday!!! Asterix and Obelix promise to get him and bring him to the village. The Belgian has the haircut of Belgian character Tintin. The grand finale has a couple funny twists and turns to it, all of which fits in with the tone and tenor of the book, as a whole. If you know anything about those two you won’t be surprised to hear that they blithely ignore all army rules and regulations and drive their commanding officers quite insane with their antics.
Want to Read saving…. Not only are these great books in their original French, but they are possibly the most brilliant translations ever done! The colour seperations art off set on many pages and the colour often sits not just out the lines bit way out.
And yeah, not much of a point, as nothing would get below a 6. You know this is true because Uderzo draws her less as a cartoon character and more as a human.
