What can I say? Post was not sent – check your email addresses! I started out wanting to hate this book, expecting general emptiness, style triumphing over substance, verbal fireworks without meaning, one joke lasting the whole pages, but it’s hard to deny the central premise: Octave has very good reason to be ashamed of himself.
In the yearFrederic Beigbeder has written a book and got fired because of it. So, for all its faults, I applaud the sincerity of its passion, its spirit of revolt, its attempt to alert us to the fact that everything is for sale, moronically and inescapably.
Beigbeder rebels like a bourgeois kid who wants to bother their father, yelling with small fists clenched in designer jeans. And what’s even more – it’s pretty damn funny.
It is part of the denunciation which goes under the name of “novel”, and is the cleverest thing about it.
